Lead Safe Renovations and Repairs

Since April 2010, the Environmental Protection Agency’s Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) Rule has been in full effect. This rule requires that firms performing renovation, repair, and painting projects that disturb lead-based paint to have their firm certified by the EPA (or an EPA authorized state), and to be trained in the use of lead safe work practices.

According to the EPA, lead paint can be found in:

24%

of homes built from 1960-1978

69%

of homes built from 1940-1960

87%

of homes built before 1940

Exposure to lead can cause irreversible damage to the brain, nervous system, heart, and red blood cells. It can also lead to:

  • Loss of memory/concentration
  • Trouble with Digestion
  • Hearing problems
  • Reproductive problems
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Difficulties with Pregnancy
  • High blood pressure Headaches

Children, especially those under six years old, are extremely sensitive to lead. In addition to the health problems listed above, children exposed to lead may develop:

  • Damage to the brain and nervous system
  • Behavioral problems
  • Reduction in I.Q. levels
  • Learning disorders
  • Slowed growth
